A letter from Satish Kumar
Dear Schumacher Magazine Team,
I am delighted that in spite of various ups and downs and difficulties, Schumacher Magazine is being published in a new form. Congratulations to everyone who has shown their resilience and determination.
I very much enjoyed the 1st issue. It was beautiful and inspiring. The articles and the images that were published were of outstanding quality. It is my hope that the editors will build on that fabulous foundation and continue this publication.
After 35 years of constant commitment Dartington Hall Trust is withdrawing their support to Schumacher College and therefore the students, staff and the faculty of the College, across the world, are working together to create a Schumacher 2.0. We are going through a period of transition and we are determined to make the rebirth of Schumacher College a reality.
In order to achieve this goal, a number of Schumacher supporters have come together and established a new Foundation, Satish Kumar Foundation, which will raise funds and facilitate the creation of a new Schumacher College. I have given them my moral support and blessings to do that and use my name.
We are all looking for a new location where the College can establish a home base in Devon. While we are looking for this new location we have also launched Schumacher Wild. We will run our short courses in a number of friendly learning centres such as Hawkwood College, Sharpham House, Embercombe, and others. We are also launching a Schumacher Foundation course. Thus a number of options are being developed and planned.
In addition to creating a home base for Schumacher in Devon another step we wish to take is to actively connect and be connected to like-minded learning centres around the world. We wish to be part of the decentralised network of self managed and self funded sites who are active in providing education related to an ecological, spiritual, holistic and regenerative approach to life. This network could form a university of the future. So that these centres are not isolated but supporting one another and sharing information. We would create a website where such centres are listed and we can share ideas, resources, teachers and other information. We are developing these ideas for a new university of the future! Roots in England and branches across the world!
I very much hope that Schumacher magazine, initiated and managed by our alumni body will become the flagship publication of this new Schumacher College and this new university of the future. I wish you the best of luck!
